Working with the Alabama Supreme Court and the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals has been one of the most meaningful and professionally rewarding experiences of my career. As a photographer, I have been blessed with opportunities to capture people, places, and events across many industries—but photographing the men and women who serve within our state’s highest courts offered an entirely new perspective on both my craft and our judicial system.
It all began when I was selected to photograph the Justices of the Alabama Supreme Court—both individually and as a group. Standing behind the camera, I quickly realized that this assignment was more than just another portrait session. It was an opportunity to document those entrusted with interpreting and upholding the laws that govern our state. Each Justice brought a unique personality and presence to the portrait, yet all shared a common humility and respect for the office they hold. It was truly an honor to capture the faces that represent Alabama’s highest court.
Since then, my work with the Alabama Judicial System has expanded to include photographing Judge Benjamin Bowden’s Investiture and Oath of Office, the Opening of Court Ceremony, the annual Red Mass, and the reception that follows. Each of these events carries its own tradition, symbolism, and reverence—moments that reflect both the solemnity and the humanity of those who serve.
In every instance, the professionalism and kindness of the Justices, clerks, and staff have been exceptional. The Alabama Judicial System operates with a quiet strength—rooted in tradition, guided by integrity, and carried forward by individuals who genuinely care about their work and the people of our state.
Having met several of these men and women over the years at political, civic, and philanthropic events, I can say without hesitation that working with them directly has deepened my respect for their character. They are not only leaders in law but also genuinely kind and approachable individuals who represent the best of Alabama’s public service.
For me personally, this experience has not only expanded my portfolio into a new area of professional photography but has also given me a renewed appreciation for the people who serve behind the scenes to ensure that justice in our state is carried out with fairness and dignity.
At Carter Photography & Design, we take pride in capturing moments that matter—whether they take place in a courtroom, a corporate office, or a family home. Every photograph tells a story, and it is our goal to honor those stories through professionalism, artistry, and respect for the people we serve.
